Medal haul for Borough of Kirklees swimmers at Yorkshire Championships

28 club swimmers make Yorkshire finals and win a total of 34 medals

At the 2022 Yorkshire Swimming Championships in February, BOK brought home a whopping 34 medals. In all, around 40 children from across the squads qualified with 28 of those reaching the finals in their age-group category events.

Swimmers met in Leeds and Sheffield for the annual event. Entry was by way of achieving qualifying times, and races were staged for all age groups, from 10 to 17+ years, in a range of distances from 50m sprints to 1500m long-distance events. In addition, the Championships is one of the few meets where team relays take place, and BOK delivered again with a gold in the women’s 15/16-age 200 freestyle.

Key individual winners included Daniel Jackson from NP who achieved 10 medals, including three sprint golds for 50m backstroke, 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly. The top-performing female was Jessica Smelt in NP, who is on transition to BOK’s Senior squad. Smelt gained two gold and two silver medals for freestyle, butterfly and the 200m individual medley. One of the youngest swimmers, Poppy Nuttman from JP1, achieved two gold medals and a silver in the breaststroke. In addition, two BOK para swimmers – Astrid Caroll and Evie Lambert – gained medals in five races.

Head Coach, Richard said, “We are delighted with the number of swimmers that reached the finals of their events. The Championships showcase the exceptional swimming talent in the county and to have so many swimmers qualify from one club is a great achievement. In addition to medals, many swimmers attained new personal best times and to see all our children improve with each competition is fantastic.”
