Swimmers with a Physical Disability – Classification

A number of swimmers have impairments that prevent them from competing against able bodied competitors.  These swimmers go through a process called “Classification”; the purpose of the classification is that it provides a certificate to ensure that disabled competitors do not get disqualified for performing a stroke incorrectly due to their disability.

Functional Classification – this process involves a medical test, technical test and observation in competition.

Disability Specific Classification:

• Visually impaired
• Hearing impaired
• Learning Disability
• Intellectual Disability
