Special Olympics regional comp – Beverley March 2024

Eight members of the squad travelled to Beverley for the Y&H Special Olympics regional competition on 2 March.    The event was excitedly anticipated due to the fact that para gold medalist Ellie Simmonds was attending, and it was also our newest member of the squad, Waleed’s, first competitive event.   What a great day we had.    Ellie was more than happy to pose for photos and talk to the swimmers (more questions about Strictly Come Dancing than swimming!).    As for Waleed’s swims – he performed like a “pro” winning gold medal in both his 25m races, and then swam the first leg of the male relay securing yet another gold medal to his tally.  When asked how he felt after his first event he had just one word – “Amazing!!”.   He certainly was!!       The day continued with great swims from the rest of the squad winning between them 5 gold, 5 silver and 5 bronze medals, 8 PB times   – and NO DQs!!  Special thanks to Josh, Michael, Adrian, Danielle and Judith at KAL who do an amazing job of coaching our swimmers and preparing them for these events.
